How It Works
Picking the book
When you join, you'll suggest a book you'd love the group to read, any genre goes, so you never quite know what you'll be reading next! When suggesting your book, please pick one that costs no more than £10 on Amazon (roughly €12 / $13), so it won't break the bank for anyone in the group who chooses to buy new.
Each month, we draw one book at random from everyone's suggestions, then we all read it together, ready to discuss at the next call. Once yours has been picked, you'll add a new one to keep the pool fresh for everyone else.
The only thing we ask is your book suggestion has nothing that promotes racism, hate, or extreme political or religious content. If your pick has strong sexual content or graphic violence, just give the group a heads up when you suggest it, so nobody's caught off guard. Beyond that, genre's wide open, so surprise us!
We don't provide the book, and here's why
There are so many cheaper (and often free) ways to get hold of a book these days, and everyone absorbs a story differently, some love a physical copy, some prefer audio, some read on a tablet last thing at night. We also don't love the idea of contributing to more books ending up unsold or unwanted. So instead, we leave it up to you to get the book however suits you best:
-
Borrow it from your local library
-
BorrowBox (UK/Ireland) - a free library app for eBooks and eAudiobooks, just need a library card
-
Libby (UK, US, and many libraries worldwide) - another free library lending app, borrow eBooks and audiobooks straight from your local library
-
Buy it secondhand
-
Borrow a copy from a friend
If you'd rather buy new, that's completely fine too, just remember to keep it to £10 or under when it's your turn to suggest a book. Most paperbacks and Kindle editions will fall well within that.
No pressure to finish
Life happens. If you haven't finished the book by the time we meet, come along anyway. Nobody will test you on it, we're just happy to see you, just expect a few spoilers if you haven't got to the end yet!
Same goes if you've just joined and haven't had time to start the book at all, come along, get to know everyone, and you'll catch up on the reading soon enough.
The private Facebook group
This is where the chat happens in between meetings, book thoughts, life updates, or just saying hello. It's a space for women who understand what it's like to feel a bit lonely, and want a bit less of it.
The monthly video call
We meet on the last Thursday of the month, 7-9pm UK time (around 2-4pm US Eastern), to talk about the book, and then just chat.
Bring a cuppa, a glass of wine, whatever you fancy. Pets are welcome to make an appearance too!
We're a small, growing club, so for now we're running just the one time slot, do check it works for you before joining.
